Sutlers, Merchants, & Resources

An ever growing list of sutlers, merchants and resources that I've used personally, have been recommended to me, or that I've found browsing the internet.
  • Burnley & Trowbridge: If you want authentic and accurate, this should be your first stop! I've purchased fabric, notions, tools, and their 18th century red heeled walking shoe (with their shoe buckles--I freakin' love them). Angela is fantastic!
  • Wm. Booth, Draper, At the Sign of the Unicorn: I finally purchased some things from here; processing and shipping isn't as fast as B&T but that's fine unless you're in a rush. I still drool over the chintz he has in stock. Loads of goodies, from fabric to notions to books and patterns.
  • Just Two Tailors: 18th century sutlers and tailors. I'm eyeing their blank, low crown straw hat to decorate myself.
  • The Village Green Clothier: The author of Fitting & Proper also has a web store! An excellent source and someone you should know (check out her jewelry, antique hatpins, and fans!).
  • Southcoast Historical Associates: Simply the best, in research, technique, and knowledge. Currently serving as president of the Costume Society of America, New England region, so you can be assured there's no one better.
  • At the Sign of the Golden Scissors: The millinery shop of Southcoast Historical Associates.
  • The Silly Sisters: Specializing in reproduction 18th century women's items.
  • Smoke & Fire: A huge selection and variety of items. Great people to buy from and work with! I have a shift and 2 pairs of stockings from them.
  • Jas. Townsend and Son, Inc.: Another well-known name in the reenacting world. Good stuff.
  • Wooded Hamlet Designs/Needle & Thread: Excellent source of sewing notions, ribbons, etc.
  • Fabrics-store.com: Linen, linen, and more linen!
  • Super Silk, Inc.: Silk, silk, and more silk!
  • Fabrics.net: Learn about fabrics.
  • Fabrics.net Store: Shop Fabrics.net. LOADS of silks, wools (a bit more expensive, though).
  • Joann's: Sign up on their email list for coupons. I get tools from them (scissors, rotary cutter, ruler, etc.), but only with a coupon.
  • Liberty Linens: Fine linens, also offering some wools.
  • Farmhouse Fabrics, LLC: A fellow reenactor recommended this site to me, for their red and white striped silk taffeta. Good prices!
  • Renaissance Fabrics: A great selection of silk taffeta.
  • M&J Trimming: I stumbled across this site while looking for purple silk ribbon. Haven't purchased anything yet, but will update when I do.
  • The Costumer's Manifesto: This is an intense site for ALL things costuming!
  • The Costumer's Manifesto Wiki: The wiki for the Costumer's Manifesto. Still in the works, and you can help fill it out!
  • The 18th Century Notebook: A repository of links, mostly extant garments for men, women and children, but also helpful in other areas. It hasn't been updated since October 2010, but what's there is gold.
